What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is applied to teeth to restore minerals to the tooth’s enamel and prevents cavity-causing bacteria. This varnish is applied to the exposed parts of the teeth with a small brush. After the application, your child’s teeth might feel sticky, but their saliva will harden the varnish.

Is Fluoride Treatment Painful?

The treatment procedure is not painful and only takes a couple of minutes. Your child might get restless, but we encourage you to allow them to sit on your lap during the treatment. After application, your child will not even notice that the varnish is still there.

What Age Can My Child Start Treatment?

At around 11 months of age, your child should be able to start using small amounts of fluoride. When you come for their first appointment, we will be able to examine your child and make sure that their teeth are ready. Once they have their first fluoride treatment, they then can start to use an infant toothpaste that contains minimal amounts of fluoride.

When using fluoride toothpaste at home, the child should be closely supervised. Apply a thin layer to the tip of the toothbrush. If you have any questions or concerns regarding their treatment, give our office a call!
